CHICAGO -- A study today suggests that watching just nine minutes of “SpongeBob SquarePants” can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.
The problems were seen in a study of 60 children assigned to watch either “SpongeBob” or the slower-paced cartoon “Caillou,” or draw pictures. They then took mental-function tests, and the “SpongeBob” kids performed poorly, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics.

Who comes up with these stupid studies?
Last time I checked no one liked to watch Caillou.

I wouldn't call performing a test on only 60 kids to be very thorough. Besides Cailou is so boring, after that anyone's attention span would be on anything else.

This exactly lol. This kind of study is basically the example my stats textbook uses as the example for a bad study.

Get out. Cailou is awesome. Better than the garbage Spongebob has become as of late.

I agree with this test if by "bad" they mean bad taste of shows. But bad as in corrupting them is not correct in my opinion.

I'd actually say Arthur is a tinge better than SpongeBob.

Anyway, SpongeBob makes people smarter.

Spongebob is actually a lot cleverer than people give it credit for. It appeals to children as well as adults because of the way the writers add in jokes and references for both age groups. A lot of the adult jokes are undertones of course but they're placed in a way so that children miss them if the reference is too explicit, or so that it just looks funny to a child. The only evidence I can think of to say it makes you stupider is because of the nonesense element of the show, but then most tv that's funny has a lot of nonesense in it. Other than that it really doesnt rot your brain much more than tv would do normally.

Well the show has been going down in quality ever since the creator left. (After the film 4th season-Present)
It's not as clever or funny as it used to be.

This would be all true and stuff had this been a few years back. The new spongebob doesn't not appeal to a higher age group. Why you might ask I don't know maybe due to more kids watching. I'm guessing every since the movie it fell down. But it's bound to happen with any show that goes as long as it does. Look at Family Guy and the Simpsons.

Well they only tested 60 children. So it is going to take more than that to see if it is 100 percent true. Cailou imo seemed very boring. I rather watch anything but that.

No way. Blaming a TV show like Spongebob for a slow brain is messed up.

I can't believe they would do a study on Spongebob when there are so many other things slowing kids down these days...

Laughable to say the least. A certain television program couldn't just slow down your brain, there has to be a stimulus.
And what stimulates it? The animation? Impossible. The dialogue? Impossible.

And, how can they claim something after only surveying 60 people? I'm in my 20's and sit down to watch the odd episode of it. Yeah, it's for children but like the others said, there are some adult jokes thrown in there that goes over the younger child's head.

The blonde girl with the black lips turned to Valkyrie.
"We know," she said. "We've seen the future. We know you're going to kill the world..."

Release it Gohan! Release everything! Remember all the pain he's caused... The people he's hurt... NOW MAKE THAT YOUR POWER!!!!

Sometimes, I feel like they want to blame TV shows for problems in society. That or Obama, hahahaha. But anyway, I think that mostly the first three seasons and the movie appealed to adults too. It had a good mix of that hilarious kind of humor that adults can recognize and the humor that kids could wrap their heads around. Once Season 4 came to Nickelodeon, it felt like they were making it very corny and that everything was done for the sake of shock relief. And two things that I hate about the specials now. They always last like 12 minutes and the ones that contains flashbacks are never ones from the actual show, just crap they made up.

They were right, seasons 4 - present are bad for kids. They're teaching kids that this corny gunk is funny
